Super Speedy Designing

01 OVERVIEW

This case study showcases how I balanced client requirements with clean easy to use design for an independent motorsport podcast.

02 ROLE

Following the artistic compass

As a freelancer for an independent client I was the only designer on the project. To ensure quick design delivery I leaned on 5 visual design principles to inform which elements go together and ensure website usability.

03 KEY CHALLENGES

Quick Iterative Design

Challenge

The client didn't have a visual brand that I could work with for the website. My challenge was to create a branding design without too many iterations and amendments from the client to keep to the timeline.

Solution

I stepped back to design the branding of the podcast to inform decisions for the visual aspect of the website.

Wireframing on the go

Challenge

Once the branding was designed I needed to understand from the client what the website was going to be used for - mainly storing audio files. My challenge was to make sure I understood the target audience for the podcast so I could tailor this as personas to guide me in the process.

Solution

I sat down with the client and sketched out the website’s information architecture and quick, low fidelity wireframes of a website layout.

02 UI DESIGN

Stand out from the crowd

The client didn't want to use the conventional colours and branding of similar podcasts on the market. The name of the podcast was based on a saying the Ferrari F1 team use. The rest of the branding followed Ferrari as a concept.

05 TAKEAWAY

Going Live

Winning moments

  • Solo Designer: Delivered on time and covered all the client requirements.

  • Client Satisfaction: Client was happy with the final product and appreciated the effort it took.

Lessons Learned

  • Define scope early: had I known I needed to design the branding as well as the website I would have asked for more time initially.
